Inline Tube - 1972 442 W-30 Restoration - Part 1 Frame & Engine Assembly

This 72 442 W-30  project was started June 2009 and completed Feb 15 2010 for the Detroit Autorama. At the Detroit Autorama it earned Best restored of show and went on to earn first place and best restored at four other indoor shows (Detroit, Louisville, Cleveland, Indianapolis) Winning the ISCA 68-72 Restored Class and earning a spot at the International Show Car Association finals in Houstin Tx 2010. This car will attend the Homecoming Show in Lansing MI, The Oldsmobile Nationals in CT, The Dick Miller Oldsmobile Nationals at Norwalk before returning to the indoor show car circuit in the

The door hinges are taken apart and rebuilt (Inline Tube offer this rebuild kit). It is very important to rebuild any worn hinges so that when you line up the door gaps they will be correct on final mock up.

We coat all large parts with blocking primer and sand with 320 until we hit bare metal. This will fill all sand blast etch and imperfections. If you have pits you will have to putty them first. Thanks Nyle, Jonas, Adam, John, and James.

All sanded and ready for paint. The frame is bolted to a rotisserie so it can be turned 360 deg and we can be sure we did not miss any spots. It's also good to have a second set of eyes to spot any bare spots.  The frame is done with semi gloss black paint.

The frame is ready for some parts to be bolted on; one of the first things to go on is the brake and fuel lines. All clamps are painted factory colors, prop valve and prop valve bracket are in place hose brackets are bolted on. Leave all components loose so they have play in them then start the line fittings. Once all the line fittings are started, tighten the components and then final snug the lines. All brake, fuel lines, hoses, clips, clamps, prop valves, hose brackets, supplied from Inline tube.

The rear axle is done. The backing plates are natural steel, all brake springs have been repainted, and the brake drum hardware was replated. The center section is bare cast, the axle tubes are painted black and The W27 cover is natural aluminum. The rear end has all new bushings, rubber bump stops and OEM axle lines.

The front brakes are detailed with silver backing plates, gold caliper brackets, correct grooved rotor, black calipers and correct riveted front brake pads.

The drive shaft is detailed. All drive shafts were bare steel and all had paint stripes for identification.
Notice the fresh welds at the ends.

The body mounts have colors on them so the line worker knew where they were to be located on the frame. The olds center mounts were different from the end mounts and the solid cushions were black.  The frames had part #s stamped in them in ¼” letters on the left rear frame rail. The factory stenciled the frame for fast identification. This was only meant to last a short time and was to be painted over in the final touch up process, but some were never touched up.

The cables had purple ends on them for identification. The head pipes on theses cars should be black, the front head pipes always rusted out before the rear as the paint burned off fast. On low mile cars you can still see the black on the pipe under the flanges near the motor. The exhaust is new from inline tube it's one of their newest products.

The rear axle is detailed. The cover is natural aluminum, the bolts are black oxide, the lines have the correct purple fittings on them, and the rear sway bar is a natural forged dark gray steel color.

This car has the correct factory style tires with SSII rally wheels in argent gray. They have the correct length, valve stem, correct capped lug nuts, NOS trim rings that have been polished, and NOS center caps.
Notice the valve stem aligns up with the dash.

The frame is almost complete. Notice all W-30s had the frame tie bars, this was to stiffen the rear end with the frame. This car has a stock length muffler made by inline tube to be just like the original high performance muffler. The Inline Tube exhaust also has a great sound.

This close up frame shot shows how nice we made the frame. This car had flat wound cables on it, so that is what went back on. Theses cars could have come with flat wound cables or spiral wire style cables, both are correct, and inline tube makes both styles with the correct color plated ends. The brake line has spring on it in this location. Inline Tube also caries the correct factory style clips to hold the brake cables and lines on the frame.

The Trans is mounted. The Trans cross member is bare steel, this is how they came from the factory. The Trans and shifter were completely rebuilt, all the rods have been replated as well as the shifter handle. The shifter was completely rebuilt using the Inline Tube rebuild kit. We used a center force clutch.

The frame is done and ready for the body. We try to assemble as much as we can on the frame before the body goes on, this savse time and it's easier to work around, rather than doing it on the lift.

We could not have completed the project without the help of the following people:
