Inline Tube - 1972 442 W-30 Restoration - Part 1 Disassemble / Engine

This 72 442 W-30  project was started June 2009 and completed Feb 15 2010 for the Detroit Autorama. At the Detroit Autorama it earned Best restored of show and went on to earn first place and best restored at four other indoor shows (Detroit, Louisville, Cleveland, Indianapolis) Winning the ISCA 68-72 Restored Class and earning a spot at the International Show Car Association finals in Houstin Tx 2010. This car will attend the Homecoming Show in Lansing MI, The Oldsmobile Nationals in CT, The Dick Miller Oldsmobile Nationals at Norwalk before returning to the indoor show car circuit in the fall.

When taking a car apart the details are all there you just have to know where to look.  under the part is a good place to start. Under rubber bushings, under bolts, where parts are bolted together at the treads of bolts there are many secrets and this is the best way to find the original plating and paint.
I like to take tons of pictures. It seems fresh in your head today but 6 months from now it might not.

The seats are completely taken apart. Photographed, sand blasted, powder coated in bare steel powder and black parts re painted. The under side and inside of every part gets the same detail as the outer body.

The gas tanks were made from sheet steel the sheet steel had the manufacture of the steel stamped on the steel. Since GM used at least three different sources for every part you could have on of three different ink stamps the tank could have as many as 4 stamps on one tank. It was luck of the draw I have seen 4 on one tank one full stamp and several partial stamps.

Seat belt tags are on all original belts, the large #s are the date codes. There were many seat belt manufactures bay trim, Robbins, Irving, hamel.  All parts have the manufacture name on them. We took the belts completely apart and had all parts re chromed.

Take plenty of pictures there are a lot of parts to the core support. Usually special attention is needed under the battery tray they are all ways rusty and pitted.

The heater box is dissembled and glass beaded. It’s a good idea to put a new heater core in when you have this all apart. The last thing you want is to have the heater core go bad when the car is all back together.  I have had one go bad and got anti freeze on my new carpet. Not fun!

Here is the blower motor all done you can check the operation with an old battery hook 12 volts to the lead and ground it. We check all the sub assemblies before we put them in the car. This saves so much time in the end and saves you from second guessing your self and chasing problems.

Parking brake pedal was bare steel from the factory with the 2 ends dipped in black paint.

When ever the parts I am working on have to be out sourced I put tape notes all over them. If it can go wrong it will. I also take a picture so when it does go wrong I have some thing to reference. Even if I have used the source in the past it’s a good reminder that I am a fussy customer. I take all the code tags off so they can’t be lost some off there parts are impossible to find.

Careful dissemble of the alt revels the original 2 digit ink stamp. The case is lightly glass beaded all nuts, bolts, pulley and fan is re plated. It takes about 5 hours to detail. Then I take it to the auto parts store and have them test it. 9 out of ten times it’s just the brushes that need to be replaced.

The carburetor is completely taken apart and all parts are plated in the correct colors there are gold, silver and black plated parts on the carb. This carb body came out a little dark so we re did it. We sent it to holly carbs and they re plated it for us. Thanks for all your work on this Chris.

The intake was in nice condition  it had some pitting near the exhaust crossover so we used a die grinder to smooth it out and re shot blasted  it and then used  brand new glass bead at low pressure to put the final touch on this.

The 72 W-30 had 300 HP from the factory. We hopped this one up a bit. As you can see we added a full length wind age tray the stock w-30 had the short one. When we put this engine together all parts were plated just like the originals all inspection marks were applied this is how it would have looked at Oldsmobile before paint was applied. Notice fuel pump was on And valve cover brackets.

the engine was painted just like at the factory there was never a lot of paint used the lower part of the block had very little paint and under the oil pan usually had no paint and it was very heavy on the valve covers with runs.

Its going together fast now and all most ready fro the dyno. The exhaust manifolds are ceramic coated in cast gray. We have tried the different paints wile good at first it still burns off in a short time.

We are back from the dyno and more items are bolted on. The engine has 415 HP and 500 lbs of torque. Using the dyno is a great way to find problems. I CANT SAY IT ENOUGH, DYNO THE ENGINE!

We have found problems with every engine on the dyno from oil leaks, water leaks, bad oil pumps, oil galley plugs missing. Even the best engine builders make mistakes. We have usually made 30-50 horse power from the first pull to the last Just by tuning. When you are done drop it in the car turn the key and you are done. Thanks Dan Jensen and Pierce racing Lansing, MI.

The bell housing is glass beaded. Trans is rebuilt all the shifter rods re plated, shifter rebuilt, shifter handle re plated, all the rubber boots replaced and foot petals restored.

The door hinges are taken apart and rebuilt we offer a rebuild kit. This is very important to re build any worn hinges as when you line up the door gaps they will be correct on final mock up.We coat all large parts with blocking primer and sand with 320 until we hit bare metal. This will fill all sand blast etch and imperfections. If you have pits you will have to putty them first. Thanks Nyle, Jonas, Adam, John, and James.
