Inline Tube - 1972 442 W-30 Restoration - Finished car

This 72 442 W-30 project was started June 2009 and completed Feb 15 2010 for the Detroit Autorama. At the Detroit Autorama it earned Best restored of show and went on to earn first place and best restored at four other indoor shows (Detroit, Louisville, Cleveland, Indianapolis) Winning the ISCA 68-72 Restored Class and earning a spot at the International Show Car Association finals in Houstin Tx 2010. This car will attend the Homecoming Show in Lansing MI, The Oldsmobile Nationals in CT, The Dick Miller Oldsmobile Nationals at Norwalk before returning to the indoor show car circuit in the fall.

1972 is a unique year for the W-30, Since the 442 is now an option on the base Cutlass so is the W-30 Package. This means that the 442 is no longer a separate model from the Cutlass but it is an appearance package and the first time you could get the base 350cid engine in a 442. The W-30 is the engine option and is now denoted in the serial of the car with the all important X in the Vin Number. All 72 W-30's can be verified by the X in the Vin which previous years need solid paper work to back up the W-30 option. 1972 is also the first year for the poly paints which meant brighter colors with more metallic in the color. This color is radiant green with white stripes and white interior.

The car is displayed with the wheels off so that all the detail can be examined.

W-30 Appearance upgrades of Dual-Intake force-air fiberglass hood, Sport mirrors, and Paint striping on sides and hood of car. The engine was boosted to 455 cid with 4bbl carb and dual straight through mufflers and exhaust. To stop the super car manual disc brakes were standard under the 14x7 wheels that road on Wide oval Belted raised white letter tires. The suspension upgrades included heavy duty front and rear sway bars and shocks.

These cars could have been ordered with many options including AM/FM Radios, bucket seats or bench seats, consoles, 4 speed trans missions, ralley gauges, aluminum rear axle covers, and a variety of wheel options.

The interior is as basic as can be with bench seat, radio delete, basic steering wheel and 4 speed shifter.

The engine compartment is open and simple with manual disc brakes and NO ac.

The Under side has all the detail of the top of the car. This is where most of the detail can be seen. There were many bare steel parts including the trans crossover and the drive shaft. The exhaust head pipes were black on all performance cars.
